Your Piano? I'll build it just for you, custom and vintage.

"I build Steinway pianos the way they were built in the Golden Age.

Each one built personally, without compromise just excellence."

Imagine going back in time to the early 20th century, when a Master Craftsman would assemble the right pieces and create  a true, vintage Steinway. Luke Piano still does it that way, and has been doing it for 40+ years in the high end, piano refurbishing business!

Let me introduce you to a little piano secret, the talents and master craftsmanship of Marshall Luke and his team of skilled craftsmen. Soon Luke and team will be the most highly sought after master craftsmen of vintage Steinway pianos in world.

Each year only a select few pianos are created by Luke Piano with this meticulous process. You can own a one of a kind piano, forged by a master craftsman who loves every piano he touches.

Marshall not only rebuilds your piano, his highly trained ear makes sure that it sounds like it should, from his long experience as a Master Piano Tuner.

Luke Piano is releasing their next, custom refurbished piano ready for sale in the Fall of 2015.

All future  projects will be vintage Steinway grands, all from around the Golden pre WWII era of Steinway, with five projects already scheduled for release over the next two years.

Each one is backed by the Luke Piano Guarantee - every piano we touch follows the tradition of piano building as it was done by Master Craftsmen in the early 20th century, no skimping or shortcuts. You get your Steinway piano the right, vintage way. Guaranteed.

Let Marshall Luke share his passion for family and pianos in his own words below.

“I’m a Certified Master Piano Technician, I am a master pianist,

a husband and father of two amazing sons. And I love rebuilding pianos the Right Way.”

My Passion For Pianos

If you are refurbishing or buying a Steinway, you deserve the excellence of early 20th century pianos. Do you want a mass produced clone or a handcrafted piano that will be reliable for 100 years, like the early days?

As a piano craftsman, I know the answer is in the early 20th century, and I create pianos to those exacting, and superior, specifications with no shortcuts.

Why I Restore Pianos

When you go to buy a piano, or rebuild your current one, you must know how the tradition of piano building is changing, and how to get value. Many take shortcuts and compromise quality.

I restore pianos because I love what I do, love what a piano brings to your home, and love the music that results. Anything less than the quality and perfection of the Golden Age of Pianos - the early part of the 20th century - is missing the sound and attention to detail.

I make sure that your piano is unique and unlike any other. Because I'm building your piano just for you, the way it should be done.

My Amazing Family

I am a father of two sons, a husband for many years, and I confess...a piano lover.

Each piano I touch is like a member of my family, like a song I write and give to you to play your music for many, many years.

I take great pride in my family, my dogs, and my pianos that I build for you.

Meet the Master Craftsman Building Your Piano

Together We Build Vintage Pianos the Right Way

Luke Piano handpicks a team of individuals dedicating their time and superior craftsmanship to creating rare, unique, and beautifully handcrafted pianos with an unmatched, rich tone. We have worked with each for a long time, many 5th generation craftsman continuing a family tradition, and know the quality they deliver.

David Warther – Ivory Artist

5th Generation Master Craftsman

We work with David Warther, a 5th generation Swiss ivory carver. These
ivory keys are handcut and installed.

His work is in museums and his knowledge, skills and inventory of ivory is rare. You get ivory custom fit for your piano, delivering the sound and feel your Steinway deserves.

Northwest Specialty Woods

Finest Soundboards

For new Soundboards, the spruce wood is handcrafted by North West Specialty Woods in Elma, Washington. This is the exact same company Steinway themselves source their spruce from today.

The soundboard panels are built only from the finest old growth Alaskan Sitka Spruce available.

Schaff Piano

Since 1861

We use 5-Ply Maple Pin Blocks from Schaff Piano, who have been in business since 1861. These pinblocks are extremely resilient and easy to tune.

When we build a pinblock, we make a mark on the case and a mark on the old pinblock, and from one mark build an entire pinblock.

John Trefz

5th Generation "Bridgemaker"

You should insist on the best "Bridge Maker", otherwise you risk the quality of your piano to luck.

We only trust our bridges to John Trefz, the 5th generation of Trefz Piano, building pianos since 1835. John is a genius at building bridges and acoustic engineering, and we know that your piano will be the best with his skills.

Conrad Storr – Premier Refinishing

Master Refinisher
Our close pore filled lacquer finishes, hand crafted by nationally known finish master Conrad Storr of Utah.

We have worked with Conrad for years and have found no one matching the quality of his work. Conrad also does the finish work for some of Steinways' art case collection, the finest Steinways made.

An elegant appearance is important but we also focus on durability that will last for generations.

Jake Mirow

Apprentice/ Protégé

Jake Mirow is an accomplished pianist, having placed in the top three positions at several local and national piano competitions.

He went to school at Arizona State University for Music Education before moving back to Colorado and beginning his work at Luke Piano Company while attending CU Denver for Audio Engineering and Sound Physics.

Jake started work at Luke Piano Company in May of 2013. He is proud to be part of such a large tradition of remanufacturing these incredible instruments.

The Work We Do

Every Piano backed by Luke Piano's Guarantee of Condition and Authenticity

Meaning the design, craftsmanship, and selection of materials have been made without compromise.

New Pinblocks

A properly replaced pinblock is an essential component of a high quality Steinway grand piano restoration.

Just having a new pin block is not enough, but maintaining the precise geometry of the original is critical.

We use 5-Ply Quartersawn Maple Pin Blocks from Schaff Piano, in business since 1861. These pinblocks are extremely resilient and maintain their tune like a Steinway should.

The Best Soundboards

We only use the original soundboard if it is found to be free of cracks and a candidate for a perfect restoration.

We NEVER shim or repair damaged or cracked boards. If it's not up to our standards, we get a new soundboard.

If a new board is needed, the soundboard panels are built only from the finest old growth Alaskan Sitka Spruce available, ensuring a grain per inch the tightest available of any spruce in existence.

  • Make no compromise in quality. Build to a standard, not a price. Strive always to improve the instrument.

    — Henry E. Steinway, Founder —
  • “Life is like a piano. What you get out of it depends on how you play it.”

    — Tom Lehrer —
  • “Without a piano I don’t know how to stand, don’t know what to do with my hands.”

    — Norah Jones —
  • “The piano is able to communicate the subtlest universal truths by means of wood, metal and vibrating air.”
